A Non-Dairy Diary

Welcome to Eats; Leaves — a vegan-slanted food review repository in the spirit of the megalomaniac bloggers of old: half writing exercise, half joke graveyard, half not good with fractions.

Nixing animal products voluntarily is itself no act of note. Participating in a narrow, fragile, seldom boring and often surprising food scene wherever I am, however, can lead to some stories worth telling.

To be a vegan today is to be a creature of pilgrimage. We catch wind of a new spot serving up exotic imitation meat, or a mainstream chef’s ayahuasca-epiphany shift toward plant-based creations, or even a longtime stalwart teetering on the brink of oblivion when legends retire and the rent goes up — and there’s (metaphorical) blood in the water.

We gnash our herbivorous molars in anticipation. We tremble with equal parts excitement and vitamin deficiency.

The hunt begins — again and again.
